Announcing Show and Tell Thursdays
Monday, February 13th, 2006
I was having a discussion with Rocky earlier today and we both agreed that we, as a community, seemed to have "lost our way" a bit with all the defensive arguing lately. We feel it is time to get back on track - sharing, collaborating, and discussing the kickass apps and techniques we're developing every day. So without further adue, Rocky and I want to announce a new "tradition" we hope to start:

A special thanks to Bob Balaban (blog posting soon Bob?) for coming up with the name ;)

Show n Tell Thursdays are going to be every Thursday - and on this day we are all going to share some app or some technique that we've developed. Here is one I posted on my blog back on September 9th, 2004. And I want everyone to participate - even if you don't normally do "geek" type posts. This also includes Admins - you admin weenies have some great techniques, tips, tricks, or apps you use to do your job better, and we could all learn from you. So, every Thursday we'll all have something to look forward to - reading about a plethora of new apps and techniques that our fellow Lotus Geeks have developed. And from this we increase the communal knowledge pool of which we all drink, and we'll all be better for it.

So today is your heads-up. The first Show n Tell Thursday is this Thursday (i.e. day-after-tomorrow). You have a couple of days to get a post together. I'll be posting, as will Rocky and many others - and we want you to contribute too. We can't wait to see what you come up with.

I could have sworn Wednesday is the day after tomorrow ? Unless you've come up with a way to use Notes to time travel ?

Seriosuly, though, it's a great and positive idea. I look forward to seeing what transpires.

Not admins! Anything but that!

I should probably mention that I'm an admin. 8 years worth of admin now. sigh. PCLP 5+6, probably 7 soon...didn't get a chance to hit the cert lab at Lotusphere. I don't do much technical writing, expecially for public use, but will see if I can think of something interesting between now and then.

Great idea! I like it. I try to write this way most of the time but it will be cool to be participatory as well as see what other folks come up with.

Nice one!

What a GREAT idea! I look forward to posting and reading.

What do you think about coming up with a common tagging scheme for these "Show 'n Tell Thursday" posts? These posts may have longer term value than the typical blog posting. It might be nice to go to technorati, some other blog indexer, or even google and search for a certain tag to pull up a history of these posts.

Great idea, indeed. But I'd agree with Dovid Gross. What would be different to OpenNTF ? Isn't THIS the right place to contribute to the Notes community ?

Cool ! I'm sick of the negative, too. Let IBM fight that battle as we continue to create and support great apps for our customers. The huge majority of the customers I deal with love our apps and I say we focus on them.
Since we can only practically get together physically once a year, I wish we could get together virtually more often. All the new SameTime/Realtime news out of Lotusphere makes me remember this is possible.

@Ulrich - I understand your comment, but let me explain. OpenNTF is mainly "concrete" stuff - by that I mean OpenNTF has products, projects, and code snippets and samples (Code Bin). Show-n-Tell Thursday is a bit more open-ended and freeform. It may be an explanation of how an innovative architecture was developed using Domino integrating with other technologies; it may be a great tip for Domino Administrators on some trick with the new Domino Domain Monitoring; and of course much of it will be some code snippet, trick, technique, etc. And some of the contributions may not even be about Domino at all - I know at least one blogger is going to talk about his endeavours in VOIP.

So, sure, there may be some overlap; and there is a distinct possibility that some of the contributions may wind up as OpenNTF products because of suggestions and discovery by Bruce, Vince, and other OpenNTF folks. But Show-n-Tell Thursday is much more open-ended and freeform than OpenNTF, and I don't think it would be right to dilute the focus and intent of OpenNTF with this effort.

Does that make it more clear?

Rock

Bruce,
Do you have any idea who to contact to start blogging there? I added my blog, made a category, etc, but my (first) post there does'nt show up. You know if anything else needs to be done by somebody manually to make this work?
Regards,
Martin
