Julian Robichaux: Notes Versus Sharepoint
Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006
Back on August 4, 2005 Julian blogged about the whole Notes versus Sharepoint thing that is now being discussed here, here, here and here.

Traditionally, Notes/Domino developers have thought of Sharepoint as competing with WebSphere Portal (and now Workplace). So it's still the same ol' Notes versus Exchange smackdown, and Sharepoint is an entirely different market, right? Listen, and listen good. You need to stop thinking that way immediately. All of these Sharepoint apps compete directly with Lotus Notes.

Julian you are simply brilliant. Oh and did I mention to be sure and read the comments.

Holy crap, I forgot all about that. I can't believe Garry managed to find it.

And brilliant is not the right word. Not even close. Just sayin' what I see, that's all.

Looks like quite a hornet's nest getting stirred up here. Unfortunately it seems that gathering customer feedback from blogs is alternately "very important" or insignificant to IBM depending on the topic. How often does a topic generate this level of interest on so many Domino blogs?
I don't know how much bigger a stick I need to get beaten with before I accept that it's time to do something else for a living. And no... it won't be Websphere.

Microsoft takes a while to get it right, but they eventually do. They have alot of work ahead, but it is getting tough to downplay the capabilities of the .NET/Sharepoint strategy. Although it does not help that I work for a non-profit organization that gets MS products at a 66% discount.

We are in the final phases of determining if we can drop our Documentum platform in favor of the Sharepoint document libraries. They do not look like much on the surface, but are pretty amazing under the hood.

BTW, the Corante article that I linked to there isn't coming up right now. Here's a link to the article in the Google cache:

Julian was right on back then. And one year later, there is still a need.

@John,

IBM is a big boy. I think they are going to do something for "their" product. Let's watch and see. As for me I will continue to support OpenNTF and it's mission which is:

"to provide a framework for the community to develop open source applications for IBM Lotus Notes and Domino which may be freely distributed"

Ed, I can't disagree with you more. The community's opinions are VERY important to IBM, I am not sure why you think otherwise. MANY IBMers follow the topics on the blogsphere, and not just the ones we agree with.

@Alan - I seem to remember a senior blue manager who likes to say "code talks..." Where's the code? The standard templates have been in need of a major upate for a long time now. Overwhelming opinion on the blogs has been that IBM needs to do something in this space to remain competitive.

I think there are notable individuals within IBM who "get it" and follow commentary in the community (I don't just mean weblogs) -- and from the outside we're probably only aware of a fraction of the people doing that.

But whether that actually translates into action within an organisation as massive as IBM is another matter entirely.
