Nomading away....

More on Nomad shortly. In the meantime check out MojoPac.

Update

Nomad installed without a hitch. After the USB key was loaded up and configured by the installer I was taken through the normal Notes client install and within a few minutes I was done. I then headed over to a nearby laptop and what do you know - Notes launched and worked as expected. Job well done Lotus.

So what files actually live on the USB key:

And in the System32 directory:

.
The Program Files contains the normal Lotus\Notes and and Lotus\Notes\Data folder structure.

That's crazy! It would probably be faster to map a network drive to a share on your localhost and install nomad to that drive. Then you could just move the files to the USB stick probably faster than the install.

Mine only took 15 minutes and I was mapped to the setup.exe on a network share on our LAN and installing directly to my USB stick.

I understand that they hope to add to the release notes that some memory sticks could take a while.

Do you have any type of antivirus running on your USB stick or is your workstation's AV scanning that drive? I just tested this on mine and it still only estimated 13 minutes for the install.

I have a new SanDisk Cruzer:

G'day Bruce! I haven't tried Nomad yet, could be good under the right circumstances.

I had already taken a quick look at MojoPac before reading this post. I installed it on a 2.5-inch USB hard drive, but have yet to test how it handles Notes Client installation, and more importantly Domino Designer and /Administrator installation. (The latter for me is a deficiency of Nomad.)

MojoPac have a performace page where they warn about slow USB key drives. External hard drives seem to be the way to go.

TIP: like quite a few others, I found that the MojoPac installer has a propensity to reject hard drives with an "invalid Serial Number" error message. I eventually got MojoPac to install by using TrueCrypt to encrypt the drive, which seems to generate a serial number on the drive that's acceptable to the MojoPac installer. One little annoyance is that your MojoPac "virtual machine" doesn't have a TCP address to enable it to easily access your host XP system. (You have to access the files inside the MojoPac "partition" by using Windows Explorer on the XP host system and using file copy to transfer them.
