Digging into Lotusphere 2008
Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008
Each and every Lotusphere becomes more and more of a challenge to truly dig into the flurry of new product announcements. While spending a great deal of my time in sessions I have also this year begun to spend more time in the various labs. Sitting down with the developers and watching a 30 minute demonstration of things like Designer in Eclipse, Lotus Connections 2.0 and even products that I don't typically work with such as Websphere Portal all seem to be coming more and more integrated in a very impressive way. Not many attendees seemed to have noticed that the entire user interface across the Lotus Software portfolio are looking more consistent as well as attractive. Today at lunch we had the pleasure of sitting with Carol Jones who had mentioned that there has been an initiative within Lotus called "One UI" which led to what we are seeing today.
Lotus is truly listening to it's developer community as evident in the new features coming in Notes/Domino 8.5. Integrated Dojo, Xpages, and other new features will truly attract not only the schooled Domino Designer but in my opinion may become the "tipping point" for the attraction of new developers to the platform. Julian and I have recorded some podcast material and due to some technical difficulties it may be a few more days until we get them out. I hope you all can be patient.
As many others have blogged already, there were so many announcements and demos during the Opening General Session that it was hard to really grasp them all. I have also met so many people for whom I have never met before. The session that Kevin and I gave on Monday seemed to have been well received as the preliminary evaluations have all come back extremely positive. Tomorrow morning Chis Blatnick and I take the stage at the Swan to give our session on UI Worst Practices and then again on Thursday morning.
