Now this is strange...
Thursday, February 7th, 2008
I was poking around on the fabulous PlanetLotus.org today and ran across this interesting statistic:

Microsoft is one of the top keywords in blog posts. For a site and community dedicated to all things Lotus I find we spend way too much time talking about Microsoft.

Between OOXML, the Yahoo bid, and general competitive positioning, you think so?

I don't.

Fair points. I bet however that it will still be a top keyword in 6 months.

OK, I'll just set up an agent to auto-post about Microsoft seven or eight times a day to make sure.

Well, I for one do a lot of blogging that tags Microsoft (and Office) that will no stop. It is all the integration work I do, both with sessions and Integra. So it is a valid tag.

Bruce, if I talk about a Domino Windows server and I use the name of the manufacturer of that product, what's wrong with that? Also, if you follow through the "Top Keywords" link to the keywords page, here's the grand total: http://planetlotus.org/keywords.php

As you can see, we spend more time talking about "database" (something that no longer exists in the ND world... ) than about microsoft...

1 2263 lotus
2 2007 notes
3 1676 ibm
4 1623 domino
5 1565 lotusphere
6 739 server
7 643 application
8 563 applications
9 487 development
10 465 database
11 465 sametime
12 453 lotusphere2008
13 449 microsoft

@Chris,

So the question would be "where are the numbers for Top Keywords coming from on the home page?"

That's probably just for the last day's worth of posts maybe?

Bruce, even if these were all references to Microsoft as a competitor, I can't see how it becomes "too much". The reality is that almost every Lotus customer has been under attack by Microsoft at some point (often more than once) in the last three years. One way Lotus has won in many of these situations is to show the strength of the community, to help customers realize that they aren't out there alone.

"Strength in numbers" combined with "knowledge is power" are why I write about Microsoft for what is only around 10% of my overall blog postings. It is fairly typical for a people under siege to want to know something about their attackers, especially ways to disarm them. Why would that be described as an "unhealthy obsession"?

The timing of this is amazing. I've been working for the last two days on this area; lunch time, after work; so just hours. It started with adding the new product names from Lotusphere but the update showed how inefficiently I wrote the keyword scoring filter. So, ground up rebuild, cleaner, faster, better….

The totals on the front page are only from the last 7 days, more specifically the last 168 hours (rolling 7 days). The keywords web page shows every last one. This list will improve when I’m done with the new function.

To get the keywords, I take the title, content body and categories of the rss feed, run them against the two lists on keywords.php to come up with the list of keyword totals and to determine if it’s a Lotus post, Lotus related or neither. There are currently 2 problems with this. A, the counts are only as good as the amount of data in the feed, so if you only have a partial entry in your feed that’s all I have to go on. B. MagPieRSS the class i use to get the feeds is unable to process multiple categories as an array. So it gets entered as a long text string that the filter is unable to process; unless the category is just "Lotus".

The quality of this is important because it determines what is shown on the front page during the week. If id didn’t do this you would see 26.4% more entries, give our take a thousand’s of a percent. With the filter improvements more Lotus related entries will show making everyone happy… and hopefully keep weeding out the happy birthdays, youtube video’s, etc. Before you get upset the ‘weeding out’ is just for the main page the white circle icon in the top nav will show you ALL posts.

Sorry Bruce, but this might be the silliest use of statistics I've seen in a long time. Wow, the Lotus community has tagged the word "microsoft" in two whole blog entries more than the word "server". Why not blog "The Lotus community talks about Lotusphere 2.5 times more than they talk about Microsoft"? That would make a good headline, but I guess Vowe would not cross link to one! (BTW, nor post a link to the Lotusphere in 60s video )

Enter Microsoft into the search bar at the top right of your blog, http://www.bruceelgort.com/blogs/be.nsf/BlogSearch?SearchView&Query=microsoft&Start=1&Count=-1 based on the results, it seems like you blog about Microsoft a lot too.

Sorry my friend, this post just does not stack up.

@Alan,

So we have a site name PlanetLotus.org.

We have the second top keyword as being Microsoft.

Lotus makes products called Lotus Notes, Quickr, Connections, Domino, Domino Administrator etc.

You don't find it odd that the keyword Microsoft being a top keyword is strange?

And it looks my last MS post was back in May of 2006.

Go fish.

Obviously I don't find it odd at all, or I would not have posted what I did. Microsoft is a pretty big keyword. I think this is a crazy line of thought, and posting like this do nothing but perpetuate the idea further.

@Alan,

"I think this is a crazy line of thought, and posting like this do nothing but perpetuate the idea further."

I don't think so.

It's your blog, you can write whatever you'd like. Just don't be upset when not all the comments agree with you. Anyway, have a great weekend, and don't sweet this stuff, it is just IT, other things in life are far more important.

Sorry folks, this thread meets the category "Best lough for some time" for someone, who did serious text analysis in its former life .....

Bruce, this is too simplistic at all. if you want to count "Microsoft", you have to sort out all places, where it is simply "it runs on Microsoft Windows ......" and so on. Because - as I see it - at least 80% of IT is dependent on Microsoft Technology, this is simply ubiquitious.

Some question to think about: but not to be answered:

Why is the word "The" more often used in a Lotus Environment than "Lotus"? ......

@Jens,

You should think harder about what I am trying to say here. Dig deep.

Yes, Bruce, I know what you mean, but using the right tools to show the point is important - at least for me.
