37signals to remove support for IE6
Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008
I was using Bascamp this morning and noticed this message:

Important Reminder: IE 6 Phase Out

In July we announced that we would be phasing out support for Internet Explorer 6 on August 15, 2008. To make the transition easier, we've extended that deadline to October 1, 2008. From now until October 1st, anyone using IE 6 to access Basecamp (or our other products) will receive a notice every 3 days letting them know they'll need to upgrade their browser before October 1, 2008 in order to continue to use Basecamp. The notice will be displayed in the web browser and will include links to download a modern browser (IE 7, Firefox, or Safari). This notice will also be shown to your clients who use Basecamp. You may want to re-read the announcement so you are prepared for any questions they may have. If you have any questions please contact support. Thanks for your patience during the transition.

Do you still plan on supporting IE6 in your company and/or products?

I was just looking at the IdeaJam stats, about 40% of traffic is IE and of that about 45% is still IE6, so looks like we'll be supporting it for quite a while to come.

I'm really happy that a company with as much internet publicity as them is making this move. I can only hope that many follow in their footsteps. The only way that we are going to change those percentages is to give people a reason to download that upgrade...

Bruce - It would be interesting to see your site statistics of browser combined with operating system.

How many visitors for example are still using Windows 2000 or anything prior to XP?

I also know there is a glitch in XP that prevents some systems from installing IE7. You download it, the installation runs, reboot; no change. Repeat. (Until you're blue in the face.)
