Community Building - Been there and still doing it
Thursday, February 4th, 2010
Today I received an email from my good friend and colleague Jack Dausman who suggested that I read and pass on the following. The first is a book by Jono Bacon who manages one of the most visible open source organizations Ubuntu. The book is available as a free download and is titled "The Art of Community".

When I started work on The Art of Community I was really keen that it should be a body of work that all communities have access to. My passion behind the book was to provide a solid guide to building, energizing and enabling pro-active, productive and enjoyable communities. I wanted to write a book that covered the major areas of community leadership, distilling a set of best practices and experiences, and illustrated by countless stories, anecdotes and tales.

The book is also available for the Kindle and other electronic book formats as well as in print.

The second is a presentation titled "Ten Ways to Destroy Your Community" by Josh Berkus of Sun Microsystems and is a must read. I feels as if I may have written or lived through some of his slides. Really good stuff.

Many thanks to Jack for passing these two things along.

I think IBM used that presentation as a blueprint starting around 1996 or so. Luckily there were a few people (hi Ed!) fighting the system.
